Among the notable African American men who are Maryland natives or have made contributions to the state are: Baltimore native and Chef Owner of HEIRLOOM Food Group, David Thomas, who stands as the epitome of his culinary philosophy, coined as “Modern Soul.”
Despite entering the culinary world relatively late in his career, Chef Thomas has always been deeply connected to the kitchen. His culinary journey began under the guidance of his grandmother, Mrs. Anna Poole Thomas, an African-American woman with Blackfoot Indian heritage. Ms. Anna instilled in him a profound appreciation for farm-to-table cooking, nourishing her family with ingredients harvested from her 13-acre property. While other children played outdoors, David found solace in his grandmother’s kitchen, observing her craft simple yet exquisite meals. These formative experiences taught him the fundamental importance of quality ingredients as the cornerstone of exceptional cuisine.
